• Binatone has upstaged Samsung by announcing two Android tablets at knock-down prices – proving Android tablets are about to go seriously mainstream.

We’re eagerly awaiting details of the new Samsung Galaxy Tab, the 7-inch Android 2.2 powered tablet that will be officially announced on September 2nd. We know it will have an amazing display and top-rate specifications, and more recently we’ve heard about some cool accessories – like the plug-in USB adapter.

But, one day before, Binatone has announced it is entering the tablet market with a choice of 7-inch and 8-inch models. Although they aren’t equipped with things like 3G and GPS, and also have resistive touchscreens, the pricing starts at just £129.99 for the HomeSurf 7 and £179.99 for the HomeSurf 8. As the name suggests, these are designed for use at home and get online via a Wi-Fi connection to your wireless router (or portable wireless hotspot, if you do decide to venture outside).

We think we can accept pressing a little harder on the screen to have rather a lot of cash kept safely in our pockets, although Samsung hasn’t announced the pricing for the Galaxy Tab yet. Who knows, maybe it will be only £200! Somehow, we think not. In fact, the Tab is bound to be priced like that of the Apple iPad and Dell’s Streak – so expect somewhere between £450-500 SIM-free. That means Binatone could well clean up when these babies go on sale before Christmas.
