The 50 billionth app has been downloaded from the App Store, five years after the store opened.
The downloader and winner of the $US10,000 was Brandom Ashmore, who downloaded OK Go’s game, Say the Same Thing.
OK Go are the legends behind music videos featuring synchronised tread mill dances and a giant mouse trap-style paint ball art work, and the new game Say The Same Thing features a similarly quirky video of the band playing the game:
The app is developed by Space Inch in collaboration with the band, who say on their YouTube video that it’s a game they often play on tour – stay tuned for What Mobile’s review.
The App Store opened in July 2008 with 500 apps, and Internet Software and Services senior vice president Eddy Cue said it had transformed how people used their mobile devices, and created a thriving app ecosystem that paid out more than nine billion dollars to developers.
“We’re absolutely floored to cross this milestone in less than five years.”
The store has more than 850,000 apps for Apple iOS devices in 23 categories, with more than 350,000 native iPad apps available, the company said.
