Is Microsoft looking to launch its own Windows Phone and go head-to-head with Nokia Lumia 920? That seems to be the latest rumour getting people excited, with a launch date of 2013 even adding a little validity to the claims.

Nokia currently owns 80 per cent of the Windows Phone space but with handsets hardly flying off the shelves, is it time for Microsoft to throw its name fully behind the platform?

According to an article posted over at China Times, Microsoft has been working on developing its own Windows Phone hardware for the past four months.

What’s more, Microsoft has already chosen its preferred manufacturing partner, which hasn’t been revealed, and could well be set to launch its first official handset in the first half of 2013.

Taking the Microsoft Surface Tablet as a starting point, the Microsoft is thought to ‘implement the vision of Microsoft’ both in terms of the materials, as well as the design language used.

It’s also thought the phone will share the same levels of service, software and hardware integration.

Little else is known about the Microsoft Surface Windows Phone and while we’re still to see the Microsoft Surface tablet in any realistic form, this may be one of those rumours that will continue to do the rounds until finally quashed or proven right.

What do you think? Should Microsoft launch its own Windows Phone smartphone and, if so, would you buy one? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
