They’ve done it again! Another superb device for an incredible price – £229.99 from HiHonor.com

For those shopping for a modern-looking handset without breaking the bank, the Honor 8X is perfect for you. Honor is known for making incredibly affordable but quality smartphones, and it has done it again. Let’s start with the design: it doesn’t look like a phone you would expect to get for £229.99, with its glass back, slim bezels and lightweight. The laser-cut edges add to the aesthetic – couple this with the massive 6.5-inch screen with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio running at full HD, you’ve got one gorgeous looking device. Now, not everything is amazing, the use of micro USB instead of USB-C keeps means the phone won’t charge super fast, but its still quick charge which does the job fine. Internally the 8X is on the low side, also expected, but can play games smoothly. A round of PUBG warmed the 8X slightly but that even happens to the Huawei P20 Pro. The lack of power might put some off, for those seeking a bit more power should look at the Honor Play, it has the Kirin 970 processor also on the P20.

What the manufacturers say:

The Honor 8X. From the 5X to the 8X, Honor X-series phones are dedicated to providing the best value to savvy customers, via a combination of cutting-edge technology, features and style. At the competitive price point of £229.99, the Honor 8X is a pivotal landmark in the series, building on the exceptional value proposition that no flagship smartphone can match. The Honor 8X provides customers with a 6.5-inch Notch FullView Display with a 91% screen-to-body-ratio and chipon-film (COF) technology along with a comprehensive list of top features. Honor continues to push boundaries, by bringing as many flagship features as possible to the budget minded consumer. The Honor 8X uses a metal middle frame equipped with advanced COF technology and patented antenna design. While also adopting a 2.5D double texture aurora glass body with a grating effect, providing an elegant and smooth look and feel. The smartphone comes in two striking colour choices in the UK, blue and black, with red currently only available in other markets.

What We Say:

Honor has basically done it again with a superb device for an incredibly attractive price. In true Honor style, it has crafted a device that does not look like it belongs in its price bracket. For those that want a bit more power can throw in another £50 to nab the Honor Play or even the Xiaomi Pocophone F1, but if that’s not important the 8X serves incredibly well. The camera feels feature rich form the first snap. Shutter speed is not instant, there is a slight lag, but that isn’t a major problem. Results from the dual 20MP/2MP snapper are quite impressive with good colour contrast and detail. Although you might want to avoid the AI mode for nature shots as it seems to make the colour quite unnatural. The night mode is something Huawei has been promoting quite heavily with all of its devices and of course its present here and it’s impressive. However, the front-facing snapper is nothing to shout about. There’s also a convenient fingerprint sensor bolted on the back to add even more quality to the 8X. Overall the 8X is a fantastic device for the price, one that won’t disappoint the average person at all.
